First Shot are one of those great Canadian eighties bands that have a range of fine songs that include heart-wrenching ballads, through catchy beats and choruses to highlight on spontaneous bursts of hard rock.

First Shot already have one album to their credit (From the Hip, ESM 071), which was released by Escape Music in November 2001. The album featured so many of the high qualities of eighties pop rock, similar to Richard Marx and Body Electric, the latter in particular as the Body Electric duo themselves Bob Buckley and David Sinclair co-write many of the tracks as well as guesting on vocals. “Dealer of Love” is the track that opens proceedings, a song that bounces along at a fair old pace and smacks of bands such as Agent and Chicago. However, track two "Sken Deep" is of interest as a wicked guitar riff introduces it, not only that it actually features a girl singer, Delana Dee, who handles lead vocals in a remarkable way, this is such a great catchy song! The ballad “Somewhere in Time” is a beautifully crafted song; Marc LaFrance seems to have a knack of singing these with ease, this particular song crescendos into a great sing-a-long anthem. “All Through the Night” is a positive song, with some great strutting guitars and delicate keys; this is so much in the vein of Body Electric. “Can’t Get Over” is noted for it’s powerful chorus, very similar to “Nightranger” this is, whilst “Into the Night” is cast in the mould of Canadian favourites Boulevard. Why not listen to “Girl like You” for a nice bit of easy listening, this one comes across as a cross between Foreigner and John Waite. “Midnight Madness” has a vibrant chorus, the title track always aims to please, and how about that Go West feel in the song “It must be Magic”. The final track “The More things change” is a quirky pop song, it may seem a long track at first glance, but don’t reach for the Stop button and you will be rewarded with an extra track….”Oh Why”.

First Shot are an excellent piece of the Canadian eighties scene that we all loved so much, this is so much an easy album to listen too, great choruses, catchy pop tunes and great song-writing. It is a shame that First Shot is not a household name as, along with “From the Hip”, this music represents some of Canada’s finest pop rock.
