Every once in a while a special band come along that are obviously a cut above the rest, and where better than from Canada? Fury are such a band, an exciting new five piece band that specialise in powerful hard rock with hard hitting chords and melodies that smack of Coney Hatch (Frictions), Triumph, Dokken (s/t - Tooth & Nail) periods, and early Skid Row.
Just one listen to opener “No for an Answer” should be enough to have you hooked like a fish, this is a guitar driven song that has a great chorus that you will be singing along to after one spin. It’s one of those songs that you can’t get out of your head. “Trouble” is a fine example of hard melodic rock that has a great feel, and is a showcase for the incredibly talented vocalist Chris Comely. He has such a strong voice that possesses an incredible range, a blast of the song “Love” should back this up, such an intricate song that has beautiful guitar playing and some marvellous bass touches. A cast of the eye over the guest musicians should make you realise the pedigree of musicians involved on this recording. “Higher Ground” is the song featured on the Escape Music Millennium Collection 2 sampler, but this is such a great tune that it’s simply wonderful to hear it again. To relax the mind how about a nice ballad in the shape of “Shouldn’t I be”, this is a simple song that certainly pulls on the heart-strings. However, Fury are more at home punching out big guitar chords and great melodies, songs like “Love’s Ammunition”, “Fire” and “Up in flames” are superb examples of hard rock that smack of “Coney Hatch” and “Triumph”. What about the great “10,000 Girls”? , a cult classic if ever there was one, and what better a song to feature female backing vocals on. Final track “Eternal Flame” is a guitar strumming ballad that warms the heart and finishes the album on a pleasant note…..or is it the last track? Check it out!
Essential Canadian rock, what more can we say?
