This man can elevate any song into a magnificent one, as he has proven time and time again from his days with Rainbow, MSG, Alcatrazz and Impellitteri. This solo album is no exception to the man’s talents as, with a golden line up of star musicians, he has recorded an album of hard rock excellence. Graham is English born and his first recording band Marbles was just the beginning of a dynamic career that would set him high on a pedestal in the world of hard rock. Graham shot to fame when he was recruited in the early eighties by Richie Blackmore of Rainbow and the song “Since You’ve Been Gone” was a huge hit. The song still enjoys regular airplay to this day. The follow up song “All Night Long” from the same Rainbow album “Down to Earth” will also be remembered by avid fans of rock music. Graham went on to join The Michael Schenker Group and record the famous “Assault Attack” before forming his own band Alcatrazz with Jimmy Waldo and Gary Shea of New England, a band that also featured guitarists Steve Vai and Yngwie Malmsteem over the span of three albums. Graham went on to work with Impellitteri and the album “Stand in Line” was released, to much acclaim, in the late eighties. After recording two albums with the band Forcefield Graham went on to form Blackthorne with Jimmy Waldo and Bob Kulick. That brings us up to date, Graham has more recently sang with Japanese band Anthem on the 2000 album “Heavy Metal Anthem”, and has recorded this fine solo album, which just begs to be heard. The title track “The Day I Went Mad” is first to attack the speakers, unleashing driving hard rock on the way, with some immense guitar solos and the immortal pipes of Graham demanding to be heard. “Don’t Look Down” bounces along a solid rhythm and twists and turns into a haunting melody whilst “Killer” is reminiscent of his Alcatrazz days. Graham’s love for the Beatles is brought to the fore in the cover of “Oh! Darling” and his amazing vocal style can only leave the listener in disbelief; the man has an indestructible voice. “Hey That’s Me” is a catchy rock song, whilst the ballad “This Day” is timeless. When “Flying not Falling” hits the speakers the force will knock you over and the playing quality of guitarists Campbell, Slash, Thomas and Parga shines through. If that was not enough then “Lolita Crush” is guaranteed to keep the adrenaline high with those nice keyboard touches from Firefly keys man Michael Alemenia. “Model Inc.” dishes out catchy classic rock with superior lyrics, “Spiked” races along at high speed and “Greenwich Meantime” finishes off the album on a high. In short, a magnificent selection of tunes that are consistently of a high standard. “The Day I Went Mad” is a classic album from a great British vocalist, who has a passion and presence like no other. With a star-studded line up this has surely got to be one of the great highlights of 2001. |
