Grand Illusion In the Beginning DELETED esm068 Band members: Anders Rydholm - Guitars / Bass / Keyboards Peter Sundell - Lead & Backing Vocals Ola Karlsson - Guitars Per Svensson - Lead & Backing Vocals Christian Sundell - Drums Grand Illusion are from Sweden and have already made their mark with the release of their debut album "The Book of How to Make It" (ESM 063), a masterpiece of melody with great songs and tight musicianship. They were formerly known as "Promotion" and have released two albums under that name; "Not For Sale" in 1997 and "Yeah, Yeah" in 1998; both on their own label "Promotion". However, so great the demand for these in the wake of the "Book" CD, it has become very apparent that these early works have become sought after. So here they are in a nice two-disc set plus 4 top class bonus tracks, and at a budget price! The late nineties saw the GI boys developing their own sound, which they have now honed to perfection, though this was an interesting era full of many influences. Whilst the band stick to their melodic roots, it is refreshing to hear a pop flavour, more notably on the "Yeah Yeah" disc. However, whilst the pop element is present, the vocals and music lean towards the lighter side of Toto and the highly regarded Chicago, but heavier tracks like "Premonition" and "Conscience Calling" demand to be heard and can only remind the listener of such luminaries as Journey and Survivor. "The "Not for Sale" disc draws on many sounds, such as Dakota, Boulevard, Adrenalin and Toto with great vocal harmonies, for which Grand Illusion have now become famous. On this disc you will find quasi-perfect ballads and beautiful melodies, laden with guitars, keyboards and infectious rhythms. As for the bonus tracks, well they are just unbelievable on both discs and it is not too difficult to see why this Swedish quintet has become a household name. These four extra tracks all go to make this double CD a very worth while and great value-for-money purchase. An essential piece of Sweden's melodic history. |
