Change Of Heart

Change of Heart are a brand new talent based in the North East of England. There have been very few British melodic rocks bands of any worth surface in recent years, but this quintet are an exception. Change of Heart are made up as follows: Alan Clark (Vocals, song writer), Ian Thompson (Drums), John Footit (Guitars), Mick Wade (Bass) and Dave Chapman (Keys). This is the line-up currently playing as an active unit and constitute the band in a touring capacity. The debut CD on Escape Music was recorded at Parr Street Studios in Liverpool with many guests including Heartland members Chris Ousey and Steve Morris, who also produced the album. Chris co-wrote a couple of the songs with Alan as well as arranging vocal harmonies and adding his own unique touch. His backing vocals and harmonies are clearly audible, especially the song “Place in your Heart”, which he wrote and arranged. Steve Morris plays guitar in his own unique style, any Heartland and Distance fans will want to own this CD on these points alone. Keyboards are supplied by Steve Millington (from the band Wax, featuring 10cc members Graham Goulden and Andrew Gold) with Distance players Dave Hopia (Bass) and Rob Kurzreiter (Drums) adding a solid rhythm section. Kenny Kaos makes a guest appearance on Guitars. The album was mixed by Delwyn Brooks (Sound engineer to Bruce Fairbairn), making this a force to be reckoned with in melodic rock circles.

Opening track “Sweat it Out” is a cracking start to the album, with a strong chorus backed with driving guitars and swirling keys. “Fire is Gone” has just as much appeal and Chris’s backing vocals can be clearly heard. The quality does not falter throughout the remainder of the album, listen to songs like “When it’s love” and “Always be the one” for great rocking songs, like a cross between Thunder and Heartland. If it’s an atmospheric touch you are after, then how about the song “Stranger”, which simply boasts chilling class and has a Whitesnake vibe to it. Another high point of the album is “Don’t walk away”, again with huge input from Chris Ousey. The song has a haunting note and features a massive drum sound, backed with subtle keyboard touches. In fact, the entire album is littered with beautifully executed keyboards and guitar solo’s that are to die for. Quite simply a recording that should stir up the current rock scene.

Change of Heart is great news for the British rock fan, there is so little talent treading the boards these days and it’s great to see an album like this being put out by a label who care for their listeners.
