Departure is the brainchild of one Mike Walsh. Mike is multi-instrumentalist and has a vast experience of the music industry. He has recently worked with Dave Rosenthal (Red Dawn, Deep Purple, currently touring with Billy Joel) on numerous projects, including this debut by Departure. Mike has also worked with members of Bon Jovi, as well as having produced, scored, written and arranged several New Jersey bands, he is currently working with Dean Fasano on the new Message album. The Message album will be released on Escape Music later this year. As well as Dean, Mike has had the pleasure of playing alongside New Jersey greats Aldo Nova and Glen Burtnick. In short, Mike works with some of the most talented and respected musicians in the melodic rock business.

Mike discovered Departure vocalist Ken Michaels in the late 1980’s when they were both playing in a New Jersey club with different bands. Soon after they began writing songs for Tony Bongiovi (Jon’s Uncle) for his Power Station operation. The basis of some of the songs on the Departure record were laid down at this time. Mike plays a number of instruments on the record, including Guitar, Keys, Bass and Mandolin. Others playing include drummer Steve Pozzelanti, keyboardsman Johnny O’ Connell, bassist Jeff Seykot and of course, special guest Dave Rosenthal, who needs no introduction.

The Departure record is a marvellous melodic rock album which combines the sound of Journey, Survivor, Tour de Force and Saga. It is an album drenched in the classic melodic rock school of thought, and the soaring vocals of Ken Michaels is the perfect addition to the overall sound. Songs like “Faster”, “Searchin’” and “Tonight’s The Night” are all masterpieces of melodic rock, a sound which so many rock fans are craving for. There are potential hits in the ballads that the band execute so perfectly, everyone’s favourite being the heart-tugging “The way you show your love”, which boasts parping keyboards and the passionate vocals of Ken Michaels, who gives it everything he’s got, and more. Moving back to the rockers, “Is this Love?” and “Anymore” are both very clever pieces, the former is a wall of keyboards, whilst the latter has a more guitar orientated flavour with a super staccato ending. “Howling at the Moon” is another song worthy of mention, the finale is so effective...
Departure are a worthy addition to the Escape Music roster and spell the start of a number of quality rock albums for 1998.
